In a recent study, 94% of 384 people who thoughty they were allergic to penicillin were negative on skin testing and challenge for penicillin allergy. In another study, 100% of 38 patients who thought they were allergic to penicillin tested negative to penicillin. These studies were presented over the last few days at the ACAAI (national allergy meeting) in Atlanta. Penicillin allergy can go away over the years. In many cases the rash experienced with the intake of a penicillin antibiotics was caused by a viral infection in the first place, Penicillin testing is very safe, reliable and can be easily performed in an allergist’s office.
