I often see patients who tell me there allergies and asthma are well controlled. But upon more extensive questioning, I learn more. Some actually avoid going outside. They can’t exercise, and are unable to enjoy barbecues and picnics outside. Some avoid spending time with friends and family who own animals due to their allergies. Now, do you call this well controlled? I agree that treatment of allergies requires environmental control – meaning avoidance of allergens as much as possible. But if avoidance limits your life to a degree that it’s less worth living, maybe taking medications or other steps is the better choice. Nowadays, we have so many good treatments for allergies, asthma, and hives. I recommend to seek the help of an allergist to select the best treatment option with the least side effect profile for you personally.
